    Be Humble

    Humility is a funny thing.

The minute you think you’ve got it, you probably don’t.

There’s an old joke about a guy who received an award for being the most humble man in town. The next week, they took it away -- because he wore the medal!

That pretty much sums up the problem.

We live in a world that encourages us to promote ourselves, advertise ourselves, post ourselves, photograph ourselves, and occasionally act like the entire internet has been waiting all morning to see what we had for breakfast.

Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself. It simply means you don’t have to wear a T-shirt announcing how wonderful you are.

The truly impressive people I’ve known rarely had to tell me they were impressive. Humble people usually don’t look weak. They look confident enough that they don’t have to keep reminding everybody how important they are.

    They listened.

    They asked questions.

They gave somebody else the credit.

    They could laugh at themselves.

And when they were wrong, they somehow managed to say those two terrifying words:

    “I was wrong.”

For some people, that sentence apparently requires legal counsel.

Humility also reminds us that we did not do it by ourselves!

    Somebody taught us

    Somebody encouraged us.

    Somebody opened a door.

    Somebody prayed for us.

And for those of us who believe, we know that every ability, opportunity, and blessing ultimately comes from God.

Pride says, “Look what I did.”

Humility says, “I’m thankful God let me be part of it.”

So here’s your challenge this week:

    Give somebody else the credit.

    Listen a little longer.

Admit one of your mistakes without adding a 20-minute closing argument.

And when you feel the urge to blow your own horn, maybe just put the horn back in the case.

We should all strive to stay humble. . . .

Humble enough to know you are replaceable, but cocky enough to know it would be a downgrade.
