A poorly dressed homeless man stepped into the church during the service, his presence an unexpected disruption. He shuffled slowly down the aisle, drawing the curious gazes of the congregation, before settling onto the floor in the middle of the aisle. A hush fell over the room, and tension was in the air.
As the murmurs subsided, an older, well-dressed usher rose from his post. With deliberate steps, he walked down the aisle, every eye following him. Instead of scolding or turning away, he sat down on the floor right beside the man. The two figures—one in tattered clothes, the other in a tailored suit—formed a poignant picture of compassion.
What a perfect illustration of how we should act, with love and kindness, by meeting others where they are in life—without judgment! Imagine a world where this was the norm!
To truly connect and engage, we need to focus on who they are and what challenges they face. It’s all about that human connection—up close and personal. By taking the time to listen, we open doors to understanding. As the old saying goes, “Put yourself in their shoes!”
Most importantly, we must approach others without judgment. Let go of assumptions and preconceived notions; these individuals don’t need to be judged. They need our help, our empathy, and our support.
God is calling us to serve others -- to honor the love we've received from Christ. Through His life, teachings, and ultimate sacrifice, Jesus shows us what it means to serve others. As Christians, we should be motivated to extend His love and compassion to those around us -- especially those in need.
Next time you encounter someone in need—whether on the street or in your neighborhood— pause and reflect. What can you do or say to encourage them?
It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.
Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me. Matthew 25:40
Dear Lord,
We pray that you help us to see the needs of those around us, especially the least of our brothers and sisters. May we be moved with compassion to serve and love them as we would serve and love You. May our actions reflect your love and grace, and may we be a light in this world.
Please join us in praying for those affected by Hurricane Helene.
