Signs

This morning, as I was heading to work, I ended up behind a car with a sticker taped to the rear window: "Don't Honk, Learning to drive a stick-shift."
Upon reading that, I immediately felt more understanding. I remained patient through the slow gear changes and jerky starts. Honestly, for someone still learning they were doing pretty good!
But then a thought occurred to me:
Would I have been just as patient if I had not seen that sign?
Probably not.
And that thought stayed with me.
Most people don’t have signs explaining their struggles. You don’t know if someone is going through a divorce, lost a loved one, feeling depressed or was just diagnosed with a serious illness.
IF PEOPLE DISPLAYED THEIR HARDSHIPS VISIBLY, WE WOULD ALL NAVIGATE THE WORLD WITH MUCH MORE COMPASSION.
But the truth is — we shouldn’t need a sign to show kindness.
Every person you meet each day might be carrying an unseen burdensome load.
So today, and every day . . .
Let’s choose patience.
Let’s choose grace.
Let’s choose love — even when there’s no sign prompting us!
