Being in the apparel business for over fifty-years, I have always been around younger people and have seen so many changes. Younger people seem to have no fear and are usually open to new ideas.

Although we are around younger people, we have to WORK at staying young. It’s more than eating healthy and staying physically active. It's about having a positive attitude, remaining curious and being willing to make changes. I’ve also discovered that one the best ways to stay young at heart is by hanging out with younger friends.

Now before you picture me awkwardly trying to blend in at a Taylor Swift Concert, hear me out. Intergenerational friendships have incredible benefits for both parties. It's a good trade! they lend us their vibrant youthful perspectives, while we share our wisdom and guidance with them! It's a win/win!

I have many friendships with customers and co-workers half my age! They make me feel younger by sharing their infectious energy and adventurous spirits. I learn from them! They encourage me to step outside my comfort zone, try new things, travel to new places, and investigate the latest technical developments.

Younger friends bring an enthusiasm and lust for life that rubs off on us and helps us see life differently.

“Befriending somebody who’s younger and helping them walk through a life stage or experience that you have already gone through allows you to relive it again, this time perhaps with more wisdom and grace.”

Here are some of my suggestions:

    • Hang around with young people.

    • Be adaptable. Embrace change!

    • Stay active - Ride your bike!

    • Remain curious! Keep learning!

    • Maintain your enthusiasm!

    • Don't take yourself too seriously!

    • Laugh at yourself -- hard and often

    • Continue to dream.

    • Count your blessings!

    • Be intentionally social!

    • Treasure your existing friendships.

    • Cultivate new friendships. . . . intentionally.

Trust GOD -- Don't worry about anything! After all, He's in charge.
