It's good business sense to look for the least expensive merchandise or service. But it's not always the best 'heart-sense'. Others have to make a living too. We need to balance compassion with our purchasing power, and find ways to help each other.
A friend of mine would go out of his way to buy simple goods from poor people at high prices, even though he did not need them. When somebody asked him why he does it, he says:
“It is a charity wrapped with dignity.”
"Charity wrapped with dignity" refers to supporting people in need while respecting their self-worth, autonomy, and humanity. It focuses on enabling choice and empowering individuals rather than merely providing hand-me-downs. Examples include overpaying for goods from street vendors, treating recipients as friends, and providing opportunities to shop for necessary items.
It costs nothing to give someone dignity.
There is no better exercise for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands: One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.
It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving. -Mother Theresa
Someone once said:
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
If you want to be happy, practice compassion.
Let us all strive to make to make charity wrapped with dignity part of our daily lives.
This approach emphasizes that the value of generosity lies in how one gives, not just the amount given.
We are all blessed so we can be a blessing.
