    Letting Go

Last week my wife and I watched our daughter Karlie leave for a Mission Trip to Scotland. We are very proud of her but like all parents, we had our concerns. Pray. Pray. Pray!

I'm reminded of the story of a young boy who went with his mom and dad by train to see his grandma. Each week it was the same: Out one day, back the next. The day came when little Tommy convinced his parents he was finally old enough to go alone.

Standing just outside the window, his parents gave Tommy last minute tips, which he repeated shaking his head. As the train was about to leave, his father whispered something in his son's ear. "If you feel bad or insecure, this is for you," and the father slipped something in Tommy's pocket.

Alone on the train for the first time, Tommy began his adventure. Everything was going well until some noisy strangers began crowding around him. He looked up to see curious people watching him sitting alone. And suddenly. . . . fear took hold of Tommy, who put his head down. And tears began to fall.

Suddenly he remembered his father's last words to him: "Tommy, if you feel bad or insecure, this is for you." The boy reached in his pocket and pulled out this note:

"Son, I'm in the last train car!"

Letting go is never easy, but it is a must. Our kids are going to make mistakes . . . hopefully not bad ones.

But parenting is not about raising children who never make mistakes. It's about being a safe place for them when they do.

As we help our children leave the nest, we must offer them our support and encouragement.

But there is nothing wrong about being in the 'last car'

. . . . or at the other end of a very long leash.
